The first piece of counsel that is given is about the feelings: the feelings of the believer and the Christian worker, particularly in connection with the state of society, the state of the nation, the state of lost souls. It may be concerning the family circle, or beyond; it may be for the Sunday School class, or the preacher’s feelings for the congregation.
The Christian worker must not be cool, aloof, distant from his hearers. While we are in the world, and while men and women still have the opportunity to repent, we long to win them for Christ. Though we judge all things we do not pass judgment, but we are sent to proclaim the gospel which offers mercy to all, no matter what they have done. Our response to sin is not to condemn, but to pity. We consider the miserable state of mankind, and the eternal terror that awaits them. We too were once lost, blind, and slaves to sin, and God did not judge us but drew us to himself in mercy. Our fellow human beings are in the same situation that we were in. Having found Christ as Lord and Saviour, and having had our eyes opened, we see with horror the situation which we were in. God has delivered us, but others also need to be delivered. Therefore we feel for them and pray for them, that they too will turn, as children or as adults. We put ourselves in their position. Soul winning is costly, and it engages us deeply. We are sent on a rescue mission by the Lord, and we cannot go about it with an indifferent spirit. We think about what is coming to them if they do not respond. We exercise great patience towards them, as others did towards us, and we remember the value of every single soul. We leave to God the matter of whom he will call, but because we do not know, we speak to all, and we rejoice over all who the Lord calls. But if they will not come, we do not cut ourselves off from their sorrow. Jeremiah wept for those who would not listen to God’s message, whether they understood it or not. We are ready to weep for those who will not weep for themselves, for God has allowed us to see more clearly than they do, what is their future if they will not come.
