Jeremiah (1-31) 9:10
Comments
‘For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing’ – these are the hill farms. They will be deserted because the people have been taken into captivity. ‘And for the habitations of the wilderness’ – the fertile areas of the wilderness – ‘a lamentation.’ Those lowland farms are deserted also, burned up indeed, ‘so that none can pass through them, neither can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the fowl of the heavens and the beasts have fled.’ They have gone. Judah is in utter desolation. The people have either fled to neighbouring countries for safety, or already been rounded up and taken by the Chaldean invaders.‘I will make Jerusalem heaps, a place of devastation, and a den of dragons’ – more likely jackals – ‘and I will make the cities of Judah desolate’ – Jerusalem and the cities. In mind are probably the unfortified cities. The fortified cities are separately dealt with, because they are places of refuge.
Application
This is all effectively prophetic also, because this will repeat historically, even into the gospel age, and there will be times of breakdown and desolation. What is going to happen in the near future from our perspective? What would be the equivalent of fortified cities being taken? Will there be a judgment so severe in the world during the last apostasy, that even national institutions and things that you might call the fortified cities, like banks and universities, and places that are strongholds of satanic force; will they collapse? What will be the fulfilment one wonders of the 11th verse in subsequent history?
