Job realises that he is crossing a boundary that he has never crossed before. He knows that no one should speak to God in the way he is about to speak, and question the Lord as he is going to question him, and yet he asks to be excused in advance on account of his extreme situation. So much of his anguish comes from his confusion about why God is treating him in this way. His relationship with God is still the most important matter in his life. The three friends would no doubt have been disturbed by these words, but they had not begun to grapple with the problem that he faced. Anyone who is to give real counsel to those in trouble must understand the severity of their situation.
Application
We must always show restraint in our language to our God, however desperate we feel. We must exercise self-control, so that even though we wish to impress on the Lord how great is our confusion and anguish, we still know that there are no circumstances in which it is acceptable to abandon our reverence for him.
