If only God would arise and rebuke Job, then he would be forced to back down. This is an admission that the three comforters are having a hard time convincing him.
This ties in with the liberal theory of righteousness. God is our Creator, we are mere men, so he lowers his standard for us. ‘You complain, Job; but God only judges you because you have transgressed the lower standard he applies to you. He could judge you much more strictly.’ Zophar is at pains to insist on this doctrine: That God does not require man to have a righteousness that matches his own; that he deliberately lowers the standard so that man by his own effort is able to produce a degree of righteousness satisfactory to God. By this means man is able to approach God in his own righteousness, and does not need the perfect imputed righteousness of Christ.
