We see here that God expects us to read his providence, especially when it works in ways that are contrary to human expectation. Calvin observes that when all things continue to leave us in a state of ease, ‘they frisk and kick like horses that are too well fed.
If God does such amazing and surprising things in the earth contrary to all expectation of the mighty, how can God’s people ever be daunted and fall silent before him in prayer, as if their case is too hard for him? Even the last great tyrant of this word, the antichrist himself, will be crushed when God moves against him. There is then no situation in which God cannot hear us.
