We could read these words as if Job was engaged in a petty quarrel in which both sides were saying something similar, but were anxious to prove they were right. That would be a mistake.
Although we risk appearing to be justifiers of ourselves, there are times when we must, for the moment, set aside self-deprecation and enter into the fray. There are principles involved which are more important even than modesty, for the cause of truth has become identified with ourselves, so that the one cannot be defended without the other. The apostle Paul spoke in a similar way in writing to the Corinthians, and admitted that this was not his normal way of speaking, but was necessary (2 Corinthians 11:21-33; 12:10-11).
