Job can see no reason why God should treat him so harshly other than that he is guilty and therefore God is punishing him for some obvious evil that he has done. And yet he is not conscious of having committed any such evil; he is not aware that he has abandoned his conscience and made shipwreck of his faith.
‘When God scourges us we may not see the reason why; if we should go to war with him, then for every point that we could lay in our own defence, he could lay a vast number against us, and so we should be put to confusion … God has a secret righteousness above what is known to us as it is declared in his law, for if even angels were examined by that righteousness they would be condemned, and there is no creature that is able to satisfy that’ (Calvin – English updated).
