The Lord is a God of truth; he does not accept human flattery. Do men think that if they say something apparently to the praise of God that he will be pleased whether it is true or not? Far from it; he values truth much more highly than the smooth talk of shallow sycophants.
This powerfully teaches that the means does not justify the end. If there was ever a good end which might justify less than good means, it is the defence of God’s honour. But Scripture does not in any way approve such a thing. Even for this cause, there can be no departure from integrity. Better to admit that we do not know than to offer a false theodicy. Barnes: ‘Every argument should be free from any appearance of sophism, and should be such as will bear the most thorough examination.’
