In his estimation he does not even attain to the level of a tree. If a tree is cut off at the root and all its magnificent bows and branches fall crashing to the ground, there is yet hope of it that it will grow again.
God has indeed hidden hope from man’s eyes so that he feels himself to be under the sentence of death for his sins, and can see no way of escape. It is only the promise of God that reveals hope to the heart and this the world cannot receive. The world is then in darkness shut in to its sentence, but the believer is able to look beyond what sight can see to a life revealed by God and provided by the finished work of Christ.
