Eliphaz emphasises again that man is not meant to be perfect (verses 14-16) – the ‘schoolmaster’ theory. Just as a schoolmaster does not expect his pupils to score 100 percent, but is pleased if they reach 70 or 80 percent, so God is content with a less than perfect life in his creatures.
Because of the similarity between the words of Job and the words of the three comforters, we learn continually from this book, that we must look behind what men say to the assumptions and presuppositions that they bring. Understanding another person’s words involves an assessment of where that person is coming from.
