Eliphaz makes a distinction between God’s saints and man who drinks iniquity like water: God does not trust his saints; far less will he trust those who immerse themselves in sin, and drink deeply from pools of iniquity. But who are meant by saints? The same word is used in Job 5:1.
Therefore, let Job realise that for him to correct God or to find fault with God is a monstrous thing to do. It is so out of order and so presumptuous that Eliphaz cannot doubt that Job completely lacks the fear of God. We see here the ability of Eliphaz’ works-based theology to so turn the matter on its head that he sees the evangelical Job as far from God and out of his favour, while he is close to God and approved – this is truly remarkable. He can summon well recognised facts and assemble them into arguments that seem so convincing, but which are built on a foundation of error.
