The phrase ‘skin of my teeth’ has entered into the English language from this passage. Job was alive, but he hardly knew how he was alive.
It was of course the Lord that prevented him from dying and that forbade Satan from taking his life. Satan had no option but to follow this specific instruction, but brought Job as far as he was allowed. No doubt he thought that his goal would eventually be achieved – forcing this faithful servant of the Lord to repudiate his God – but he must have realised at this stage that his plan was not going well. There must have been a secret foreboding in his heart that in spite of his initial confidence that Job would fall catastrophically, his plan was being frustrated. He must have realised to his frustration and puzzlement that once again there is an invincible strength within believers that prevents him bringing them down.
