Job feels utterly isolated. He has reached the point where he thinks God is his enemy.
Was it too much to expect that Job would react any differently to such an extreme trial? Does the weak and lowly believer have sufficient resources within him to cope with the full force of the devil’s animosity? No, but although he does not have strength within himself, he does have all the strength of the Lord available to help him. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness for his grace is sufficient for us. Job is given to us as an example of perseverance patience in suffering (James 5:11). Although he appeared to falter and stumble at times, yet by the help of God he did not completely fall. He said some unworthy things and adopted wrong attitudes to the Lord, but he never denied the Lord and he still continued to look to God for help. He was recovered out of this condition and was brought to see and admit his foolishness and to ask God for forgiveness. Overall he advanced wonderfully through this trial and learned lessons which he could not otherwise have learned.
Job will come to regret this language and regard it as hasty. We can learn from this that all may still be well with our souls and with the Lord and yet it may appear to us to be very different, therefore we must never despair, for Job was taken into more extreme darkness than we will ever be and yet was recovered from it, so that he again praised God as the only wise God. Satan has power to confuse us beyond our ability to grasp, but the shield of faith is sufficient for all these tests.
