Here we have an insight into the godly character of Job throughout this prolonged trial. This may not have been evident at all times, but it was always there.
‘God’s word was the rule he walked by’ (Matthew Henry). God’s word is our only sure anchor in this world of illusion and change and chaos; we cannot hold onto anything firmer than this. The rope may disappear into the waters out of sight, but that rope leads to the harbour of eternal safety and we must follow it to its end. When the believer sees such graces in himself as this – a firm hold on the word of God as our unfailing guide, and a determination to hold on to God’s commandments – he draws encouragement from this. This is not because he finds any grounds in himself for hope, but because he sees evidence of a genuine work of God in his soul, for without a work of God these things would not be there.
