The way this first verse of this chapter is phrased probably indicates that Job paused at this point to give opportunity for Zophar to speak, but when he remained silent, Job began again. Zophar does not speak in the third round, because he has said all he has to say and sees that Job is not cowed by any of his words.
Job’s conscience is very sensitive. In all his troubles he dare not say anything false, for to do so would only increase his pain since he knows God to be the God of absolute truth. When we are disciplined by the Lord, we must make up our minds to open our hearts to him and to hide nothing from him. We will not utter one word beyond what we know to be true for we are conscious that he scrutinises our hearts. The same is true in our dealings with our fellow man. Whereas the wicked are driven to an excess of lies by their troubles, the righteous see truth as their refuge and their ally, and they are determined never to abandon it.
