But God knows where wisdom is to be found and he knows how to dispense it to his children. ‘The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy’ (James 3:17).
God knows how to direct us in paths that lead to wisdom, for the sum total of all wisdom is Christ, ‘In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge’ (Colossians 2:3), and he says to us, ‘Follow me’. He possesses all wisdom and he has used that wisdom himself to secure the salvation of his people. He freely gives wisdom to all who ask, saying, ‘If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him’ (James 1:5). Wisdom is accessible to mankind because God has spoken into our world and given us the Scriptures. Christ also has come into the world and he is the personification of wisdom, the man in whom ‘dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily’ (Colossians 2:9). And even before the incarnation, God gave his children the promise of the coming Messiah so that all their hopes were in him. If God knows the place where wisdom is found, then we ought to cry out to him day and night until he gives it to us. God withholds such a great gift until we appreciate what we are asking for. Therefore he says, ‘My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. 8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. 10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee’ (Proverbs 2:1-11).
