Then he (God) saw it (feminine), that is, he saw wisdom. Again, this does not mean that God was looking at something outside of himself; he was looking at something within himself, which he consciously considered and declared.
Wisdom includes the skill which God demonstrates in the laws of motion, physical constants, the astronomical bodies, life on earth, man with the gift of reason and creativity, and especially the gospel and the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. God wishes to communicate his wisdom to mankind. By making us capable of understanding wisdom and by sharing his wisdom with us, God forms one basis of fellowship with his creatures. An appreciation of his wisdom is one major stimulus for us to worship him. Our capacity to appreciate his wisdom is very small now and we can currently be viewed as children, but after we are glorified it will be greatly enhanced so that we can understand as adults.
God prepared or established it or made it ready, and indeed, he searched it out. This has in mind God’s skill as a teacher. The teacher considers how to communicate the essence of a subject to his pupils. He knows he cannot explain everything immediately so he studies how to define the essence of the subject, planning future lessons in which detail is added. He has searched it out in the sense that he has reduced it to its essence and yet left out none of its length or breadth. Contained in the cross of Christ is the sum total of wisdom distilled into its essence, so that it is a doorway through which man can go to gain knowledge. Man’s God-given task was to have dominion over all creation and it would take time for knowledge to increase as he investigated the world he found himself in. In making this investigation and especially in studying the word of God, if it were not for the fall and the darkness that has enveloped his mind, man must discover wisdom.
