It is right for those who have substance in this world and who come into contact with those who have nothing through no fault of their own, to give of their means. God has brought the two in contact with each other so that there may be an opportunity for succour to be given. For the rich to withhold their gifts under these circumstances is an evil thing, but for them to give is a blessing, both to others and to themselves. It is possible to have memories of past acts of kindness without sin, and yet we must not so cling to past blessings that we are unwilling for our circumstances to change. Paul said , ‘I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need’ (Philippians 4:12). When he suffered want, he accepted this as the will of God in his life and did not pine for his former blessings. His experiences were not as extreme as Job’s but he shows us the right attitude to changing circumstance.
