God is always with his children but their ability to see this is not always the same. Job’s first reason for wanting to return to the experience of former days was that he longed for the presence of God.
This is a clear mark of salvation for it is the attitude of one who has forsaken the world for God and who has learnt what has true value. Job was sure that God had now forsaken him, but he was mistaken, as the start of the book tells us and the end of the book confirms, in thinking that God was now against him. He was required to walk by faith through this terrible experience for his own good and for a testimony to the truth before men and angels. His holding on to the truth was going to become a powerful argument against the claim of Satan that all God’s people serve him for earthly rewards and not out of selfless love for their Lord. By proving the devil wrong Job was bringing glory to God, but not without being very hard pressed first.
