After seven days Job ‘opened his mouth’ to speak as he had not spoken until now. So far he has shown remarkable constancy, and has mortified all complaints that may have risen up within him from the flesh.
‘Here we see why a man is compared to a shadow. It is not only because our life is so frail but also because we are lacking in constancy, so that there is no stability in us. We are fickle-minded, looking sometimes so stately that it seems we had the courage of a lion, and then becoming as fainthearted as a woman, so that there is no reason or stomach in us … Let us then mark well the suddenness of the change that befalls men, that we may better look about us, and when we have called upon God in the morning, let us do the same all day long … Thus we see how we must always continue in prayer and supplication’ (Calvin – English updated).
