How worthless were those who, together with their children, now boldly insulted him to his face! They had themselves been driven from the society of men because they were counted as vagabonds. They contributed nothing to their community and were seen only as parasites on society because they were unwilling to work or fend for themselves.
All this was a manifestation of the hatred of the devil who, when given free reign by God, found as powerful means as he could to express his loathing for God’s faithful servant. Satan of course hates with no cause other than that he is evil, and that God’s people are righteous and are the objects of his favour. His own followers are easily persuaded to see things the same way and do not trouble themselves overmuch about the rights and wrongs of their prejudices.
These worthless people are described in great detail by Job. It shows how we can fix our minds on one who has injured us and become hostile towards them. The remedy, of course, is to remember the promises of God and his unchanging goodness towards us. We walk by faith, not by sight, and we must go on believing that behind a frowning providence God hides a smiling face. We have been given enough by God’s grace to bear patiently with suffering for a short time at this present time.
