‘For what portion of God is there from above?’ By these words Job reminds himself that he cannot sin with impunity. God is over all the ways of men and observes all their devices and no one can get away with sin in secret.
The knowledge that God sees us in all we do, and that what we hide from the eyes of men is known in detail to him: this knowledge is our safeguard and will bring to life our consciences. God’s knowledge of us is of course far greater than the knowledge we have of ourselves. If we are able to search our own hearts, he is able to search them far more carefully, so that our aims, our motives, our pretences, our deceits, are all viewed by him. If a man attempts to shut the Lord out of his heart, he removes the possibility that he can draw near to God. The believer welcomes this scrutiny of the Lord, for how can he have fellowship with God except in the intimacy of his own heart? Therefore the new birth includes the planting in our hearts of a new honesty before God, and this is precious and must be preserved diligently.
