Another error that Job might have embraced – but had not – was to idolise earthly riches. He might have fallen into the snare of hoarding gold and other forms of wealth so that he could gloat over how much he possessed.
Many do make a god of wealth and their thoughts are seldom far from their bank balance or the number and worth of their possessions. These uncertain things are such a source of uplift and joy to them that there is no room left in their heart for the true riches. They become incapable of deriving any pleasure from the Lord or his work or the advance of his kingdom. How carefully we must examine our hearts to make sure this does not creep in, either in the form of self-satisfaction with our riches, or of anxiety and jealousy over others who have more than us.
