He was also angry with the three friends of Job because they had condemned him and stated their belief that he was being punished for his sin, and yet they had been unable to say what that sin was, or to prove him guilty. In such a serious matter where a man was sufferings so badly, it was the cruellest of accusations to claim he was guilty and then fail to substantiate this. Since Job had been able to refute their claim so that even they saw they could not press it, they should have withdrawn it. Instead, in complete breakdown of their friendship, they had held onto their opinion as no more than an unfounded suspicion. This stubborn adherence to a point of view was unjust, biased, and probably self-serving, for they were too proud to admit they were wrong. We have seen that they held this view because they were unsympathetic with Job’s doctrine and took offense at his claim to be accepted by God on the basis of grace alone. Self-righteousness made them unwilling to admit that they were not accepted by God on the basis of their superior character and works.
