Elihu prepares the way for what was to be a very forceful move, for he was about to criticise some of the most renowned men in the land. He was going to admonish the three friends who had come so far to bring the fruits of their experience and he was going to admonish Job who had outstanding respect in that society.
God gives wisdom to those who trust in him that exceeds all the wisdom that comes naturally with age. This heavenly wisdom is worth far more than even the greatest wisdom that the world knows about. There is another factor besides mere age which determines who has wisdom and whose words are of value. Each man has a spirit within him; if that spirit is taught by the Lord it will be enlightened, and it not taught it will be in darkness. Wisdom comes only from the Lord and he alone can give it to a man. What passes as wisdom on the earth is a very inferior thing, for the things that are highly esteemed among men are an abomination in the sight of God. Wisdom is very precious and those who have it must recognise that it did not come from them but was given by the Almighty. They can take no credit for it and they must never boast about it.
