The correction to the text (qere) has the third person singular ‘his soul’ instead of the first person singular ‘my soul’ (kethib). God will redeem the repentant man from the destruction which threatened his soul. The fear which God surrounded his soul with, has had its effect and has succeeded, as God knew it would, in bringing him to a better state of mind. Like a tree cut down but which still has life in it and sends forth a new shoot, so the man’s life shall see light and this small recovery will lead to an eternal blessing. Where God puts spiritual life in the soul, he will not allow it to fail. He does not want to see us perish and therefore welcomes our repentance and is happy to forgive and restore though we can never make up for the sins we have committed.
