God also has unlimited power and he holds man’s life and future existence in his hand to dispose of us as he wills. Since man is so insignificant and dependence on the Lord, we see the inappropriateness of his rising up against God and presuming to correct his Creator as Job has done. How can a creature with so little power even over his own preservation take it on himself instruct God and even to criticise him for his government of the world. By God’s breathe, his Spirit, life was put into man in the first place, and that gift of life which is so precious and so far beyond our power could be withdrawn at any time. The argument is not only that God has the power to do this at any time, but that he would be perfectly just to do so. Since man is in a position of such dependence on the grace and kindness of God, he dare not complain of mistreatment. Let man remember his origin and what he could so easily return to – the dust – and let him not go about to instruct the one who gave him life and can take it away at any moment.
