A man who speaks words of truth is entitled to expect those who hear him to receive that truth, and he can be sure that, if they refuse to do so, it is only because their hearts are intransigent. We are designed to recognise the truth as it comes from God’s mouth and do not need to have every tiny step proved to us, for it agrees with the understanding that is put in us as those made in the image of God, and is consistent with what is already written on our hearts. We may therefore proceed in talking to the unconverted on the assumption that they are accountable for what they do with the word of God and that he will hold them responsible for it on the last day. But the believer who has tasted that the word is good should love that word and find it easy to embrace it.
