The truth is a boundless source of satisfaction and delight to those who are upright, and the pleasure is enhanced when it is shared with others. When the beauty we appreciate in God’s truth is independently conveyed to us from the minds of others, it is like the heat which one coal receives from another, increasing the overall temperature of the whole fire. Elihu invites his audience to join him in the enjoyment of truth but, before they can do so, each one must learn to recognise and value what is good for himself. This is the only acceptable starting point says Elihu if we are to have real wisdom. We must desire the truth, not our existing point of view. When you are admonishing another, don’t go by your own ideas and plan to win the argument with them. This is not about you winning the argument; it is about God’s truth prevailing, to his glory, not yours.
Application
‘When it is a matter of yielding an account of our life, we must not look to have any other judge than God, who will give sentence according to his own knowledge, and then it will be in vain for us to answer back, for we will gain nothing by it. But since men are rebellious and cannot find it in their hearts to confess that God is right unless they are compelled to do so, God uses a manner of speaking in the Holy Scripture, that he is content to go to law with us, which will be like some agreed upon judge between him and us. Not that such a thing can really be done, but in order that we should be more reproved and convicted, since, although we were to go to law with him, it did not help us a bit’ (Calvin – in modern English).
