‘Drinking up scorn like water’ – this is a figure. To Elihu, Job is behaving just like the wicked.
All of this is said in faithfulness to Job and in love for a believer whom Elihu wants to see restored. We can get stuck in a groove, and lose sight of our own behaviour so that we are unwilling to look at ourselves as others do. At times we need strong medicine and we need others to say shocking things to jolt us out of a foolish state of mind. Complacency may need a strong word to awaken us out of it, for we can drift into it imperceptibly, and if we justify ourselves as we progress into this sin, it can seem to us that our state is very different to what it really is. Others may see us more clearly than we see ourselves and it may fall to them to awaken us with a word that has to be uncomfortable to us in order to be effective.
