When rightly received, affliction is the means that God uses to cure the soul, but we must be so careful how we respond to it because it can either bring us to repentance and admission of our guilt, or it can drive us further into bitterness and resentment. These words are spoken to encourage Job to respond correctly.
When hard circumstances are against us, we are liable to become bitter and angry. We must suppress this tendency to act with anger, because then we don’t pray or listen to God. How foolish we are when our own stubbornness or pride prolongs our trials.
When God brings us into a broad place, we become aware of magnitude of his goodness to us and the resources he has at his disposal to bless us. We have a sense of anticipation of how much more he has for us in the future and we allow our hope to expand into that broad place which is prepared for all who love him.
