What seems like random swirling of the clouds that results in rainfall in a particular location; it is all under his control so that the whole is turned around by his guidance. Nothing is given liberty to determine itself, but all things are obedient to him in the inanimate world and in the living world. The only creature to disobey God, and that wilfully, is man. This is Elihu’s doctrine of providence – a world under the close watch and care of God where his infinite mind is silently arranging all things and who does not overlook the needs of any. Each one is provided for, and not even the least significant is overlooked. Does this mean that none experience shortage? No, because all this takes place within the context of the fall which has superimposed the bondage of corruption over the top of God’s providing. Nevertheless, Christ teaches, the evidence of God’s caring provision is still visible.
