God himself, in his essential glory, is so far beyond us that his majesty is unsearchable. How does a finite mind begin to grapple with infinite truth? Where does it begin? We cannot organize our thoughts when we have so vast a subject.
The response of all right-minded men and women is to fear God, not to be suspicious of him. They fear him not because he is arbitrary and unpredictable and may do anything at random to harm them, but because he is holy and always acts consistently with his holiness, and if they depart from a reverent attitude towards him, he will take account of it. They fear him not because he is severe and incapable of kindness and mercy, but because he has already shown them his grace and, realising that it is totally undeserved, they long to please him and become like him by living lives worthy of their holy calling. They therefore bear patiently with affliction and do not allow themselves to respond by accusing God of being other than he is.
