Have you measured the earth, Job, and can you tell its dimensions: its length and breadth, its circumference, the number of its rivers, the height of its mountains and the depths of its oceans? Again, we have to acknowledge that in our day knowledge has increased (Daniel 12:4), and many things that were hidden from Job are known to us. But still much remains unknown and certainly to the average human being what we know is only hearsay and not personal experience. Obviously God knows all that he has made and the dimensions of his world were chosen by him according to his infinite wisdom. His governing of the world from day to day requires him to continue to know its boundaries and the changes to them that time brings about. God’s knowledge dwarfs our own and we know that we could never take over the task of managing creation from him because there is so much that we are ignorant of. Yet God does this work effortlessly so that we take his government for granted. We are compelled to trust him to carry out this work, for it is presumption to think that we can share it with him or be partners with him when we do not understand what he is doing. But if we are not able to understand the government of the physical world, then what possibility is there that we can understand the government of the spiritual world, which Job is chiefly agitated about? No one who has not mastered the ABC can go on to complex grammar.
