Will the clouds above you hear your instruction and obey you by releasing their moisture and dropping their refreshing rain upon you? You are powerless to have any effect on inanimate objects for they only recognise the voice of their Creator. You may shout at them all the day long and you will only tire yourself out. However, the entire creation is obedient to God and recognises his voice. All obey him, that is, with the sole exception of mankind, who ought to have better obedience than any other, since he is created capable of obeying consciously, willingly, and intelligently. Other parts of creation obey in the way they are capable of obeying, the animals according to their instincts, and the inanimate world according to the laws by which God governs them. It is he alone that decides to cause the rain to fall in one place and not in another.
