Job 38:37 Commentary and Bible Study

Job’s mind must be expanded to realise how much of God’s work – even though he is familiar with it – he had not taken account of. The clouds pass over our heads day and night, but who can number them, and without numbering them, who can control them and send them to the intended location? The counting of the stars is just the beginning of what is required to govern their movement and their effect on the earth. But the materialist says, why should anyone count them? Why should anyone need to know how many of them there are? The world is quite capable of running itself, and does not need an intelligent agent to direct its every step. Really? Is matter self-organizing, self-governing? Is all the order and purpose in creation spontaneous and fortuitous? Do we not see countless examples of care and purpose in nature which defy chance and chaos to produce them? Why are we so wilfully blind? Job cannot pour out the bottles of heaven as the clouds release their moisture in the very place that God ordains. He does not understand the mechanism by which God brings this about and even if he did, how could he cause this to happen on a daily or an hourly basis, so that the whole earth is supplied with moisture. The passage refers to the ground when it is hardened by drought, so that it has become incapable of supporting life. Then it becomes obvious how much it needs to be watered. Can Job bring supplies to just the right place to relieve such a situation?
