God gives Job a curious assignment. Let him go and try to subdue human pride.
This is said to bring home to Job the enormity of God’s power. Pride is tenacious, it is self-justifying, it keeps us from coming to Christ. It is at the bottom of all strife and takes so many forms: influence, power, possessions, learning, pride in the very form of pride. It makes us oversensitive, critical, rehearsing our wounds; it makes all others seen as beyond any praise. Even the best we do is damaged by it. The gifted are proud of their works, the less gifted are filled with envy; even shy people can be proud. Pride will negotiate, but never surrender. It will let go and say, I need to be more humble. I will be fifty percent for the Lord and fifty percent for me. It makes us blind. It leads us into our biggest sins. Pride hurts the church: it is behind envy, strife, and factions among God’s people.
