To look at Leviathan is to know that he has enormous strength, strength which it would be frightening to test. The neck is often weak, a vulnerable point at which an attack can be directed. It can be twisted and the creature disabled, but not in the case of Leviathan. Where others are weak he is strong. His neck is furnished with immense power as he takes hold of his enemies and throws them down. He has confidence in all his movements and overcomes whatever comes against him. ‘Sorrow turns into joy before him’ or literally, dances before him. Anyone in his way dances out of the way in terror.The word ‘flakes’ translates a word meaning the folds or dewlaps of the animal. They too are not loose as in other animals but are form and strong and indicate that there is no part of this animal that is weak or less adapted to his ferocious spirit. Leviathan doesn’t seem to get tired though he is on the move for long periods.

Application

Where Job is weak and where we are weak Leviathan is strong. The believer should never grow tired in God’s service but their strength should be renewed by unseen resources. God will give us strength for all we seek to do for him. We call upon him when our native strength is exhausted and we overcome fears and discouragements and opposition. By the Lord’s help we ‘[cast] down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ’ (2 Corinthians 10:5). There are gentle things about the believer. He shows kindness to all around him and he willingly does no harm to his neighbour. He loves souls and witnesses to the truth of the gospel wherever he can, but even this should be strong and abiding.
