How ineffective are all weapons available to Job on this giant of the deep. There is nothing that he has that poses a serious threat to Leviathan, who accounts all such things as toys and something to be laughed at.
The lesson for Job is clear. He is being urged to imitate this mighty beast in being beyond the reach of any weapon available to his enemies. Men don’t waste time by attacking this monster; his superb defences are well known. Neither should men waste time taunting the believer; he cannot be got at like that. He is not a prickly person or someone who has all sorts of weaknesses that make him susceptible to attack. Insults can get no hold on him for his own self-evaluation is far more thorough than any criticism that comes from outside. He knows his own failings better than anyone else, and yet God, who knows yet more, has forgiven him and accepted him. He discerns between truth and falsehood and cannot be easily taken in by flattery for he knows what is in the heart of man. No attack against his God can get anywhere because the Lord will defeat all his foes. But Job has made himself an easy prey of the comforters. They have found it a simple matter to rile him. Yes, he had to cope with his sufferings, and he had to do battle with not knowing the reason for the Lord allowing it, but he should have known his God could not change or do evil, or harm his servant, and this knowledge should have been a bulwark against his foes. The believer must push Satan’s darts aside and continue to trust in all circumstances.
