These words of comfort become words of torment to Job. They are like food held out to a starving man which he cannot eat because his mouth has been gagged, or because it has been laced with poison.
The fact is that often we face worse troubles, increasing difficulties, when we come to God, from Satan and the world. Of course we set against this our spiritual blessing, both now and in the world to come, but Eliphaz is not talking of this. He is talking of blessing in this world. All these blessing will come to Job right now, if he follows Eliphaz counsel.
Supposing that Job had repented, but had not been made rich. Eliphaz would have said that his repentance was not real. It is like those who say, ‘Believe, and you will be healed.’ What happens if you are not healed? You are told, ‘You have no faith!’ Eliphaz and his friends say, ‘We have researched this. Don’t discuss this – we are telling you; this is why you are suffering these things.’
