Job’s sons died because of sin, Bildad bluntly declares. He knows how to hit the raw nerve.
Why is Bildad so rude and insensitive? Usually, people behave in that way because they are offended at the believer’s theology. Bildad, it seems, had resented Job’s insinuations over the years that Bildad’s righteousness was inadequate to bring before God, and that he must stop trusting in his works and come – like Abraham – for a free pardon by faith alone. There is an enmity between Christ’s disciples and the world, and this enmity may be particularly strong when it comes from the self-righteous, who resent the message of the gospel when it places them outside the kingdom of heaven.
