Job argues the impossibility of pleading his case with God because of the great distance between them. The majesty of God and his elevated being, as the Sovereign Lord of all, places him beyond the reach of man.
How wonderful that God has provided a Saviour who is exactly what Job was asking for and far more. He has made it possible for us to draw near to God without fear, even though his power has not changed and his anger at sin and insistence on justice remains undiminished. By taking human nature the Son of God is able to be our representative, to become our surety, responsible for our obedience to the law, and ready to take the penalty of the law in our place. At the same time, as the Son of God, he cannot fail in the task he has set himself: to be our Redeemer. He has become our compassionate High Priest, able to ‘be touched with the feeling of our infirmities’ (Hebrews 4:15).
