This is about Christ’s eternal being, his pre-existence. How did John the Baptist know about that? He was the first prophet since Malachi given to the Jews for four hundred years.
We live in an affluent society, we have so many luxuries. We are programmed from birth, these days, to think of ourselves, and to think that we have a right to all our comforts and our liberties. But when we come to Christ, and we are saved and made his own, we are taught to live for him and put him first. What would we not sacrifice and give up for him? We do not live in an age of martyrdom in the Western world. We do not live in an age of pioneer missionary service. Our comforts are so great, what would we not do for him? Sadly, even in Christian circles, in Bible believing circles, we see so much of the opposite. In pulpits and in churches, people inclined to be showmen, people who are great personalities and exhibit themselves. We even hear of some great personality preachers who have publicists, if you please, like showbiz people.
