We see the hostility in this line of questioning. It is as if they say, ‘Don’t you know that we have come from the highest council in the land, and we are pressed with getting a response from you, and you must respond? Do not play games with us. We have come from higher council in Jerusalem, and they can take action against you if your answers are trivial or evasive.’ So they interrogate him because they are in such a state.
