Here, there is amplification but it is a form of repetition. Everything was created by him, by Christ. Among the members of the Godhead, one God determined to create, but Christ is the agency for Creation. That is emphasised not only by the apostle Paul in Colossians 1:15, but in the letter to the Hebrews and chapter one – ‘God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.’‘All things were made by him.’ This is going to be so important, because soon we are going to be reading about how he became man. He stooped and stooped so low, and in amazing divine love and condescension came into a body of flesh, to be our representative, to be humiliated on our behalf, and suffer and die for sinners. But before John gets to that, he must emphasise there was not anything that exists that was not made by his power and his agency.
