John 1:34 Commentary and Bible Study

John the Baptist saw and heard, for the other gospels record, ‘Lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’ (Matthew 3:17), the voice of the Father. People constantly say there is nothing about the Trinity in the Old Testament and that it is launched on you in the New Testament. Here we are technically in the Old Testament and we have Father speaking from heaven, the Son being baptized, and Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. John speaks as if his audience will have no problem with this at all. John gives his formal testimony to the one standing before him, whom he has baptized as the eternal Son of God come down to earth and taking human nature to become our mediator.
