John 1:43

‘The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip.’ It would seem, if we read it correctly, just before he leaves he meets Philip, another disciple-to-be. He immediately says to him – ‘Follow me’. The Lord finds Philip, but not as we would find; Christ leaves nothing to chance. Philip is one of his elect and has been loved from all eternity. He will not fail to find him. Note that ultimately it is the Lord who finds us, not we who find the Lord. We desire to follow the Lord and it seems to the seeker that he initiates everything. But the truth is more profound: Christ is drawing us to himself, even as we begin to seek.
Application
Christ demands total loyalty and commitment from his disciples – ‘Follow me.’ Some people could never do that. They say, I see what Christ has done for sinners, and am ready to be changed by him, but to pledge myself to him, to take his direction in everything, I cannot do that. If so then you cannot be saved. You must be ready to give your heart to him and to submit to him as Lord.
