In the case of Nathaniel, Christ allows Philip’s zeal for his friend to express itself, and lets him bring Nathaniel to him. Philip announces, ‘We have found him of whom Moses in the law’, and also, beside Moses, ‘the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth’. We have studied Moses and the prophets. This is the one who fulfils it all. This is their well thought out conclusion. He is the Messiah. He is a son of a man, Joseph, but he is the Messiah. And Philip introduces him in this way to Nathanael. It is a very revealing comment. Most Jews did not think that way at that time. They were not reading the books of Moses and seeing Christ in them. Philip and also Nathanael, it turns out, were enlightened people. They read Moses and the Prophets, but they read them seeing Christ, and when they read, they had light.
Application
Well, this is something we get when we come to Christ. It is a wonderful thing to suddenly begin to grasp the Scriptures, to see the doctrines. The doctrine of the depravity of man – you suddenly see it in the Bible. The doctrine of Christ – we receive so much light as soon as we believe, and make so many discoveries. We discover the unity of the Bible – Christ is everywhere. He is the great cable that runs through from beginning to end.
