Then the great contrast between the seed of the serpent, the false shepherd, and the seed of the woman, Christ the true shepherd: ‘The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.’ To take, to take, and to protect his own interest. ‘I am come that they might have life’, spiritual life. He gives, gives, gives life.‘And that they might have it more abundantly’: eternal life, ever progressive life, spiritual life. You have a new nature. You have union with God, communion with him, when you have a new spiritual life and walk, when you have eternal citizenship, sonship of the family of God, and membership of the great family of Christ’s people. You have life more abundant; every month, every year that goes by in the Christian life, brings more light, new discoveries, fresh wonders, fresh instances of answered prayer, deliverance by God, strength and help, bringing you nearer to him.
