What an expression this is! The Father will approve everything that the Son does. Of course, it has been determined by Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the eternal counsel that the Son will come and be the agent of our salvation.It may appear that they arrested him and tried him and executed him by their own power, but it wasn’t so. He allowed it to happen. We read of it in this very Gospel that a number of times they tried to take him and they just couldn’t. He exerted his power and just walked through the middle of them. But the time came when he allowed himself in apparent weakness to be arrested and to be crucified and slain. And here he teaches that it is at his say-so. He has the power, the authority, and the right, to lay down his life as the one appointed to be our sacrifice and to take it again as he raises himself from the dead, having made a satisfaction for sin.
